En 2014, la Banque centrale des Etats d’Afrique de l’Ouest (BCEAO) estimait que le taux de bancarisation de la zone UEMOA s’élevait à 14.83%. En 2011, il n’était que de 7.93%. Bien qu’il ait bondit de près de 6% entre 2012 et 2013, le taux de bancarisation de la zone reste bas et les populations de l’espace UEMOA restent encore faiblement bancarisées.
Avec un taux de bancarisation de 16% et 70% des comptes actifs de la région, « le secteur bancaire ivoirien est le leader de la zone UEMOA », indique un rapport de la BCEAO.

S’ils en tirent grande satisfaction, les membres de l’Association professionnelle des banques et établissement financiers de Côte d’Ivoire (APBEF-CI) n’en rappellent pas moins que les chiffres de l’organe central ne tiennent pas en compte les titulaires des comptes Mobile Money.
L’ensemble des banques ivoiriennes totalise 606 agences dont 25 ouvertes en 2016. Le décompte n’inclut pas Stanbic qui n’est pas encore membre de l’APBEF-CI ainsi que la Banque d’Abidjan (filiale de Banque De Dakar) qui vient de recevoir un avis conforme de la commission bancaire. Selon l’association professionnelle, quelque 536 milliards FCFA ont été accordés au titre de crédit aux petites et moyennes entreprises ivoiriennes en 2016, soit 13% des concours des banques à l’économie.
