La société américaine de technologie financière Umba a procédé au rachat d’une participation majoritaire de 66,06% au capital de la microfinance kényane Daraja Microfinance Bank Limited (Daraja MFB). La transaction a été annoncée le 29 juillet 2022 par la banque centrale du Kenya. Umba, qui est déjà présente au Kenya via son entreprise de crédit Umba Technology Ltd, étendra ses opérations dans le pays sur le segment des services financiers aux microentreprises.
« La Banque centrale du Kenya se félicite de cette transaction qui est un élément essentiel du plan de transformation de Daraja MFB. Elle renforcera cette microfinance et soutiendra la stabilité de ce secteur d’activités au Kenya », a indiqué le régulateur du système bancaire kényan. Trois mois avant cette acquisition, soit en avril dernier, Umba avait clôturé un financement de série A de 15 millions $ pour étendre sa gamme de services financiers et bancaires en Afrique, plus précisément dans des pays ou le mobile money est largement répandu.
Au Kenya, Umba avait déjà obtenu en janvier 2015 une licence d’exercice de l’activité de microfinance auprès de la banque centrale. Après le rachat de Daraja MFB, la fintech américaine étendra ses services de microfinance aux petites et moyennes entreprises mal desservies du pays. Daraja est classée comme « une petite microfinance, disposant d’une part de marché inférieure à 1% du secteur, au 31 mars 2022 », précise le régulateur du marché bancaire kényan.
L’investissement d’Umba dans cet établissement renforcera son modèle commercial et soutiendra la numérisation de Daraja MFB. Précisons que la fintech américaine fondée en 2018 par Barry O’Mahony et Tiernan Kennedy est également présente au Nigeria où elle opère avec une banque locale pour offrir des services bancaires numériques aux populations de ce pays anglophone d’Afrique de l’Ouest.
