Selon les données publiées par le Bureau de gestion de la dette (DMO) du Nigéria, le lundi 3 avril 2023, les emprunts du Nigéria auprès des banques publiques chinoises ont plus que triplé de juin 2015 à décembre 2021. Ces emprunts ont fait grimper la part de Pékin dans la dette bilatérale du Nigéria à 84,7%.
La même source (DMO) a aussi indiqué que l’encours de la dette du Nigeria envers la Chine est passé de 1,39 milliard de dollars le 30 juin 2015 à 4,29 milliards de dollars le 31 décembre 2022.
Tous les prêts nigérians octroyés par la Chine sont des prêts préférentiels avec un taux d’intérêt annuel de 2,50 %, une période de remboursement de 20 ans et une période de grâce de 7 ans.
Le bureau de gestion de la dette a également indiqué avoir identifié 15 projets soutenus financièrement par des prêts chinois, notamment ceux liés à la réhabilitation de la route nationale Abuja-Kafi-Makurdi, la modernisation de la ligne ferroviaire Lagos-Ibadan et la fourniture de matériel roulant et équipements destinés au projet de métro léger d’Abuja.
La dette bilatérale totale du Nigéria est passée à 5,07 milliards de dollars fin décembre 2022, contre 1,58 milliard de dollars fin juin 2015.
Les autres principaux créanciers bilatéraux du pays à part la Chine sont la France, le Japon, l’Inde et l’Allemagne.
